Public Service Commitment
Garvey Schubert Barer attorneys and staff are dedicated to the communities in which we work and live. Whether it’s through the firm’s support of pro bono activities, serving on local boards, or getting involved with local charities, community service is fundamental to GSB’s culture.
As a firm tradition, Garvey Schubert Barer encourages our lawyers to devote at least 10% of their annual accounted time to pro bono legal matters. We recognize that our right to practice law comes from the public and carries with it an obligation to serve our communities. Since 1985, we have encouraged our lawyers to serve by implementing specific policies that carry incentives for performing pro bono legal work. Further, Garvey Schubert Barer strongly encourages staff to participate in community service. Our employees are eligible for thirty hours of paid community service leave per calendar year, including participation in a community service day.
Garvey Schubert Barer annually presents the Dallaire Public Service Award to honor a firm employee who has made outstanding contributions to his or her community. The award was created in 2003 to honor Greg Dallaire, a retired Garvey Schubert Barer owner, whose goal was to ensure that commitment to public service would be a part of the firm’s character. The award recognizes staff members and attorneys who have made an extraordinary contribution in the area of pro bono legal services or community service. Greg Dallaire’s legacy and commitment to community service continues to shape the character of Garvey Schubert Barer.
In 2007, our attorneys and paralegals combined to contribute 6,127 hours of pro bono legal work to the communities in which we live and practice. Valued at our standard hourly rates, our contribution amounted to more than $2.06 million.
